Arrival & Getting Started

The English Language Institute is located at 500 East Washington Street.

We recommend that new students arrive a few days before the program to arrange their housing and get settled. If you do arrive early, stop by the ELI and talk to one of the program instructors if you like. We do not encourage latecomers. Students must request special permission to enter a program late. Permission is not always granted.

Obtaining a University of Michigan Identification Card (M-Card)

A soon as you arrive, you need to get your university identification card or M-Card. You should go to the Housing Entrée Office, which has two locations. One is on Central Campus, Room 100 of the Student Activities Building (SAB). The other is on North Campus in Room 1212 of the Pierpont Commons. In order to get your M-Card you will need to show a picture ID (passport, driver's license) and the letter of admission from your department, college or school, or the ELI summer program. You will need your M-Card to check into a residence hall, eat in a residence hall, use the athletic facilities, check out books from the library, and use the computing facilities. The Entrée Office is open Monday-Friday, 8:00 a.m. - 5:00 p.m.
