Who may apply

The ELI Summer Language programs are designed for students who will be studying at a U.S. university in the fall. We cannot accept students who want to study English only for the summer and then return home. Prior to 1990 we did offer intensive language courses for any student interested in studying at our institute, but we no longer do.

If you have been admitted to the University of Michigan, you have priority over non-University of Michigan students, if you apply before the program deadline. Although each program has minimum TOEFL requirements, if you have been admitted to any program at the University of Michigan, you can be admitted to one of our summer programs, regardless of your TOEFL score. For students not attending the university of Michigan, the following TOEFL requirements must be met.

English for Academic Purposes: 550 on the paper-based TOEFL, or 79 on the Internet-based TOEFL

English for Business Studies: 600 on the paper-based TOEFL, or 100 on the Internet-based TOEFL

English for Legal Studies: 580 on the paper-based TOEFL, or 92 on the Internet-based TOEFL

You should apply to the summer program as soon as you can. We will make every effort to admit you; however, sometimes programs are fully enrolled and we are unable to admit everyone who applies.

Students who have been admitted by a university or college other than the University of Michigan and have low TOEFL scores can apply, but acceptance is not guaranteed.

How to apply

You can download an application for the summer program from your program page. Fill out the application and mail it along with your $400 advance deposit and a copy of your letter of admission from the school you will attend in Fall. Your deposit should be paid in the form of a check, bank draft, or money order made payable to "University of Michigan ELI." Please contact ELI if you would like to arrange payment by wire transfer or credit card (Visa, MasterCard, Discover, American Express). We can accept a fax application, but you must follow-up your fax with your deposit to reserve a place in the program. You will not be fully admitted into the program until we have received all of the necessary materials from you.

When you will hear from us

If you will be attending the University of Michigan in the Fall and there is still space available, we can accept you into a program as soon as we receive your application and deposit. If you remember to include your e-mail address along with your application, you will hear from us 3—4 days after we receive your application. Regular mail correspondence will be slower. We will mail a response to you 3—4 days after we receive your application, but regular mail can take as long as 1—2 weeks. Applications from students attending other schools will take longer. However, we will consider your application and make every effort to respond as quickly as possible.
