Classical Music

Miscellaneous Music Sites
  • We used to have an excellent link here to a site with all kinds of links to live radio stations etc. Unfortunately, they started to incorporate pornographic ads in their site, and since we were sending rather a lot of students to the site, we had to delete the link. If you find a site without such ads that includes lots of links to live radio stations, info about the charts and other music news etc. in Germany, Austria and/or Switzerland, please email Hartmut!
  • mamarazzo A fun starting point: this site features easy-to-read articles with all the latest music/entertainment industry gossip and news!

Band homepages

  • 2raumwohnung Currently popular band. Very mellow music. Very user-friendly homepage: click on "Videos" to see a few of their videos, and on "Songtexte" to see the "minimalist" lyrics.
  • Abba Deutschland
  • Die Ärzte Die Ärzte are a punk band and are known for their provocative lyrics (e.g. "Männer sind Schweine," "Madonnas Dickdarm," "Omaboy" etc.)
    • Konzertberichte: Die Ärzte Follow the links to "Konzertberichte" [ignore the merchandising] to see reports on various Ärzte concerts. This is a fun way to see people using fairly hip language to talk about music.  The reports range from set lists to kids talking about how they weren't allowed to bring drinks in and had to bring them back to their mother, who must have been waiting in the car, before they could get in and get crazy...
  • Wolf Biermann This link takes you to the Wikipedia entry for this provocative musician and writer. He voluntarily emigrated from West Germany to East Germany in 1953 at age 17, but was eventually expelled from the DDR and forced to move back to West Germany in 1976, because his songs were consistently critical of the DDR regime.
  • Einstürzende Neubauten
  • Eko Fresh German rapper. Enter the site and then click on "Onlie-Media" for access to a couple of his videos and some audio files.
  • Fettes Brot
  • Herbert Grönemeyer
  • Juli Currently popular pop band; very pierced lead singer. Click on "foto & video" for links to some of their more popular videos.
  • Nina Hagen Homepage
  • MJackson.de German MMJ World
  • Georgie's Kraftwerk homepage
  • Modern Talking Deutschland Germany's non-answer to the Backstreet Boys.  Modern Talking was Dieter Bohlen and Thomas Anders, two untalented, tanned one-hit wonders from the 80s who came out with a remix of their little song a few years ago and subsequently feuded and broke up. They have become cult figures of popular obsession and disgust. Dieter Bohlen, better known than the other guy and a favorite topic of German tabloids, plays the role of "Simon" on "Deutschland sucht den Superstar," the German version of "American Idol," i.e. he's the mean-spirited #$%@& who entertains the nation by his vicious putdowns of the contestants.
  • Nena ==> 99 Luftballons (check out the German lyrics, where the 99 balloons cause a nuclear holocaust)
  • Pink Floyd auf Deutsch Tons of info, including German trannslations of the lyrics!
  • Die Prinzen Witty a capella group popular with German teachers (e.g. for Subjunctive II practice: "Ich wär so gerne Millionär...")
  • Pur Deutschland Popular, squeaky-clean rock. To my great shame, the lead singer is apparently called Hartmut.
  • Rammstein Some very disturbing lyrics, but also lots of very clear, simple German, and interesting plays on words. Rammstein remains one of the most internationally successful German bands. Click here to find some excellent translations of the lyrics, next to the original German, and accompanied by occasional explanatory notes.
  • Reinhard Mey Songwriter known for his thought-provoking, sometimes humorous lyrics.
  • Die Scorpions Die international erfolgreichste [=most successful] deutsche Band.
  • Silbermond Currently popular pop band. Very user-friendly homepage: click on the links under "Musik" to see videos, listen to songs and see song lyrics ("texte").
  • Sportfreunde Stiller Currently popular pop band. Click on "Netzgut" to hear some of their music/see some videos.
  • Bruce Springsteen Fanseite
  • Die Toten Hosen Sie singen zum Beispiel das Lied "Bayern" ("Ich würde nie zum FC Bayern gehen..."). This webpage is available in German, English and Polish.
  • U2 Tour.de
  • Marius Müller Westernhagen
  • Wir sind Helden Currently popular pop band. Very user-friendly homepage: click on "Helden Musik" and then on "Helden hören" to hear their music, and on "Helden auswendig lernen" to see the lyrics.
  • Wise Guys A capella group popular for their witty lyrics.
  • ZERSEZTER.DE -- Punkpop aus Freiburg, c/o Lutgerius Greuel "ZERSETZER.DE ist Punkpop aus Freiburg. Subkultur pur. Heisse Scheisse. Das geniale Finale. Coole Jungs mit Gitarren. Was dort geschmiedet wird, ist schräg und gerade neu und alt, na dann bis bald." [Some vocab for this: zersetzen=to corrode, subvert, cause to decompose; schmieden=to create (from der schmied = smith); schräg=crooked ==> unconventional, suspicious, weird; na dann bis bald=well then see you soon]

Song Lyrics

Note that many of the band homepages above include song lyrics.
  • German for Music Lovers Great site with song lyrics to an eclectic range of newer and older songs, including vocab annotations and exercises.
  • Let's Sing It.com Not a German site, but you can find the lyrics to many German songs using the "search" function here, if you know the name of the artist(s) or song(s) you are looking for.
  • Deutsche Liedertexte und englische Lyrics Searchable collection of lyrics for currently (1/2003) 4,000 English and 1,300 German songs. Works in Explorer, but not in Netscape 4 on my Mac (I haven't tried it in Netscape 6 or 7)
  • German Music Database Excellent collection with all kinds of info on lyrics and German Music generally.
  • Virtuelle Lieder-Bibliothek Massive collection of links to German and English sites offering song lyrics.
  • Schnellsuche.de Lyrics und Songtext-Suche Search engine for finding song lyrics. Loads rather slowly on my computer, contrary to the name :)
  • SWR3 "Lyrix"  German lyrics for lots of English songs.Based on a popular radio show.
  • Schlagertexte A collection of lyrics for German "Schlager." This word means "hits," but has come to designate specifically the kind of squeaky clean songs that one imagines only one's parents listen to. Great for practicing your German, and maybe you can even persuade your instructor to play a couple of classics in class, like "Er hat ein knallrotes [=bright red] Gummiboot," or "Aber bitte mit Sahne [=whipped cream]" [about a group of overweight ladies who want to have everything with whipped cream; concludes with the priest's sermon at the funeral of the last of them, in which he expresses the hope "Daß der Herrgott den Weg in den Himmel ihr bahne [=that the Lord may open the way to heaven to her]/Aber bitte mit Sahne."
  • Volkslieder Verzeichnis Very comprehensive site with lyrics, and in many cases sound files of the melodies, of German folk songs, religious hymns etc. A fun song to look for for starters is "Meine Oma fährt im Hühnerstall [=chicken coop] Motorrad." A more serious song you may like, with lyrics by the poet Heinrich Heine, is "Die Lorelei."
