In and around Ann Arbor...

For additional questions about conversation opportunities in Ann Arbor not answered on this page, please use the "Contact/Feedback" link in the navigation bar on the left.

Year-round

  • Stammtisch
    • Meets Thursdays 8:00 pm, generally in a bar on or near Main Street. Join the email list to stay up-to-date on where and when the group will meet: http://groups.yahoo.com/group/a2stammtisch/join
There's also a facebook page: look for "German Table / Stammtisch." Alternatively, contact Andy Kasten for the current location and for more information. Wherever the Stammtisch meets, he'll be wearing a VfB Stuttgart soccer jersey -- Debitel on the front, Bordon #5 on the back. It's white with a red collar and stripes.
    Stammtisch
    • Meets Thursdays 12-1, generally at Dominick's (812 Monroe Street, near the Law Quad), and in the School of Education Building when Dominick's closes for the Winter.  Contact Ted Wilson for more information. [last verified: 9/4/11]
  • German Speakers' Round Table (Deutsche Tafelrunde)
    • Meets Tuesdays at 8 at Grizzly Peak, 120 West Washington St.
    • For questions, contact Mark Doeffinger, call 734 453-2394, or check the listing in the Ann Arbor Observer. [last verified: 9/4/11]
  • Deutscher Klub Chelsea
    • Meets at 1 p.m. every last Saturday of the month at the Wolverine Bar in Chelsea (20460 Old US 12, on the corner of Old US 12 & Main St.). For more information, contact Edith Weber. [last verified: 9/4/11]

Fall & Winter only

  • Kaffeestunde in the MLB (Modern Language Building).
    • Kaffeestunde in the MLB takes place once a week around lunchtime in 3110 MLB. Please use the "Contact/Feedback" link in the navigation bar on the left to find out the current term's meeting times.
  • Kaffeestunde at the Max Kade German Residence in North Quad.
    • The Max Kade Kaffeestunde takes place once a week. Please use the "Contact/Feedback" link in the navigation bar on the left to find out the current term's meeting times.
    • Please note that by attending, students in German 101-231 can make up an absence: just ask the person in charge to let your instructor know you were there.
  • Deutschtisch in North Quad
    • There is a German Table in North Quad once a week.  It will be marked by a sign saying "Der Deutschtisch." The conversation will be facilitated by the Max Kade House Head Resident.
    • Please use the "Contact/Feedback" link in the navigation bar on the left to find out the current term's meeting times.
    • Please note that by attending, students in German 101-231 can make up an absence: just ask the person in charge to let your instructor know you were there.
    • If you don't have a Residence Hall meal plan, you would need to pay for dinner in order to get into the dining halls. The price is roughly $10 (somewhat cheaper if you have Entree Plus), and you do get to eat all you can eat :)
  • RC Mittagstisch
    • Takes place in the Residential College MTThF 12-1, Room 122 East Quad.  This German lunch table is associated with the Residential College's (excellent!) intensive German courses, but students from outside the program are welcome.  You can bring your own lunch or buy lunch in the East Quad cafeteria, but you don't have to bring food if you're not hungry :)  For more information, please email Janet Shier.

Spring & Summer only

  • Deutschtisch
    • The Spring/Summer Deutschtisch is associated with German 100 in the Spring, and with German 230 in the Summer semester, but speakers of all levels are welcome to attend.  It generally meets twice a week over lunch from 12:15-1, but may start slightly early or late depending on what is happening in the 100/230 class on that day.  Please email Hartmut to get on an email list where information about this and other regular German-related events is sent out weekly.
